Business protection gap is ‘great opportunity’ for advisers
SMEs in the UK should increase as the growth agenda plays out and the requirement for great comprehensive advice increases.
In February, the Business Protection Focus Group is holding a special week of events, debates and training tips to help advisers get their employer clients covered.
According to Stuart Halliwell, founder of Stuart Halliwell Consulting and founder of BP Focus week, the upcoming event will build on the success of the first BP Focus week, which took place last year.
He said: “Advisers on the first week found the debates valuable with practical insights, real conversations and guidance that supports better client outcomes – and they wanted more in the future.

Business Protection Focus Week 2026 launched
Business Protection Focus Week 2026, an online event focused on business protection, has launched.
The event, which will take place on 23-27 February 2026, consists of a series of debates and discussions to provide tips for advisers wanting to cover more businesses.
The goal, according to the organisers, is to expand the business protection market and appeal to new and seasoned advisers.
Key outcomes for the event include:
- Raise awareness and provide thought-provoking insight
- Inspire advisers to want to be involved in the market
- Increase adviser knowledge and give them the confidence to approach this area
- Highlight the depth of support and training available to them across the industry
Event partners for this year's Business Protection Focus Week include: Iress, Everywhen, Vitality, L&G, Zurich, LV=, Canada Life and Swiss Re, among others.

Business Protection Focus Week returns in February
Business Protection Focus Week is returning in February featuring representatives from Everywhen, Iress, Waymore, London FS, Royal London, Trethowans Solicitors and Bizval.
In its second year, the free to attend virtual sessions will cover a wide range of business protection opportunities.
These include exit planning, opportunities for mortgage advisers, how group protection policies can support clients, factors affecting the value of client’s private business, practical protection for sole traders, disaster planning for business owners, business protection planning for family businesses, business whole of life and business healthcare and protection.

Business protection insurance in focus
There’s an opportunity for advisers to go beyond conversations about employee benefits to include a range of business protection products. “A business can have the best employee benefits in the market but it’s no good if it doesn’t have the means to pay for it because the owner died,” says Stuart Halliwell, founder of Stuart Halliwell Consulting. “It’s an underserved market and a great opportunity for advisers.”
The launch of Business Protection Focus earlier this year, which is supported by insurers, advisers and reinsurers, is also helping to raise awareness. This ran its first BP Focus Week in June and, after 650 people attended, is planning to make it a twice-yearly event. “It’s great,” says Roy McLoughlin, consultant at Omny Benefits. “It got people talking about business protection, which will help to drive take-up.”
